Peter's Pence collection in support of papacy should remind laity of general call to service

A hat tip to St. Peter's Helpers for reminding us about this work of the laity in today's post, What is Peter's Pence?.

For, in this time of emphasis on the ministry of the laity, as expressed in the Post Synodal Apostolic Exhortation of our beloved Pope John Paul II, promulgated on December 30, 1988, [On the Laity (Christifideles Laici)], it is only right that voluntary laymen's contributions not only be offered but increase annually in support of the papacy. In these perilous times we need a vast army of diligent workers in the field of the Lord who pray, fast, and make their offerings--both spiritual and material.

Pope thanks organizers of Peter's Pence collection

Vatican, Jul. 07 (CWNews.com) - Pope Benedict XVI (bio - news) met on July 7 with members of the Italian group that administers the annual "Peter's Pence" collection, and thanked them for their support to the papacy.

"This is the first time I have met you since God called me to undertake the Petrine ministry," the Holy Father told the 30 leaders of the Circolo San Pietro, "but I have long known of your service, animated by convinced faithfulness and acquiescence to Peter's successor." The Circolo San Pietro arose in the 19th century to provide charitable assistance for the needy in Rome. Today they provide shelter for the homeless, assistance for unwed mothers, and free meals for the poor. Members of the group also act as honorary ushers in St. Peter's Basilica.
